Current Information:Age-21 24, Hill Road, Mitcham Cerisy-Gailly Military Cemetery, France In August, 1915, 5th Division moved to the Somme, an area of the front line recently taken over from the French. For the rest of that year, 1st East Surrey of 14 Brigade were either in the front line trenches near Maricourt or in billets in Suzanne or Maricourt village. On 26th November, 1915 they began another tour in the front line. Although not a very active time in the trenches, with the weather and the danger of collapsing trenches, proving to be a bigger problem than the enemy, there was still some shelling and sniping taking place and although the battalion diary makes no mention of it it is likely that it was one of these two dangers that resulted in the death of Lance Corporal Lunn who was killed in action on 1st December, 1915. |
